This project added on to the rear of a low 1.5 story bungalow. You can read a lot more about this project in the case study, Expanding the Heart of the Home.
Before
This photo, taken from the alley access at the rear of the property, shows a small dormer popping up from the low roof, this was done in a prior remodel (before these current owners bought the home) to create the right head height for the stair and the new en-suite bath. We needed to keep our addition low enough to not have to rebuild this dormer. The roof also extended over a bump-out which was also added at the same time as that dormer, to create a little eat-in nook (the four, small, square windows). That was removed to make way for our addition.

After
From this angle, you can’t even see the original house in the background. We did a primary gable spanning the width of the house, careful to land the peak of the new roof in a way that would not require altering the existing little dormer. A secondary gable pops out from the first and houses the new home office. The larger part of the addition extended the kitchen and created a new great-room living area.
